2014 – EATING HEALTHY

Did you make resolutions or goals? How are you doing?

My actual goal is to eat healthier. I want to cut down on red meat, and eventually most meat. I want to eat organic foods without additives and sprays.

I eat a lot of fresh veges and fruits. I also eat some frozen fruits and veges. If they’re not in season and you can’t get them fresh, frozen is okay – as long as there are no additives.

One thing I read last year was if there are more than five ingredients and you can’t pronounce any of them – don’t buy it. I’m working on that, but have a long way to go.

Why is it so many things have twenty or more ingredients that you know aren’t good for you? But they sound so good. Sometimes they are and sometimes I kick myself because it really wasn’t worth it.

So fruit and veges, chicken and fish, brown rice and olive oil are becoming my ‘favorite’ foods. Quinoa is good for you, but I haven’t found a way to eat it that I like yet.

Any suggestions?

I’m an egg for breakfast person, but I’m trying to substitute steel cut oats with blueberries and almond milk.

I’m also trying to avoid a lot of gluten. If I eat very much of it my body does weird things, like an elevated pulse.

And we’re in Tucson for the winter. My husband loves to eat at pubs. Everything on the menu looks unhealthy. (Not that I don’t like it – like pulled pork sandwiches, but not healthy)

We ate where they posted the calories, sodium, etc. and I ordered a salad with 1450 calories and 2200 grams of sodium. L

So I’m struggling. Have you any suggestions for helping me to eat healthy?

How are you doing with your goals this year? Do you need any help?

  1. Don't eat a salad w/ that many calories? Really, that's beyond belief. but I was at the grocery store recently and saw some corn muffins. I picked up the package and saw that they had 450 calories each. I put the package down again. The food industry really doesn't make it easy for you to eat healthfully.

    1. That salad was one of the healthier choices. My husband isn't into healthy eating. And I completely agree -it's not easy to eat healthy.

  2. I love steel cut oatmeal - I make it the night before and then just have to reheat it. Then the experiment begins - what's in the kitchen that can go into the oatmeal.
Best of luck with trying to eat healthy.

    1. Thanks Victoria. I usually try to find some fruit and almond milk. I'm pretty boring in the morning.

  3. Since you like eggs, how about egg whites or egg substitute? I add 1 whole egg to the egg whites, beat, add feta cheese and either make an omelet or scrambled eggs. The salad probably had that many calories because of the dressing and any cheese, breading (meat or bowl). If you ask for only veggies in your salad, grilled meat, and lite dressing on the side, it'll help. I always check the menu online first to find out the best calorie deal. If it's not salad, it's soup - but then tons of sodium. Also, the book (libraries have them) Eat this not That are good at pointing out what you can eat - they even have a pretty good cookbook called Cook This not that. Good luck :)

    1. it's not just dressing. Nuts, cheese, seeds, beans. (Not that those things are bad for you--in moderation.) Also croutons, olives. Sorry. There's a lot of high cal stuff on a salad--or salad bar.

    2. Thanks for th book suggestion. I'm not familiar with that one.
I usually ask for dressing on the side but never thought about asking for veges only. Great post. Thanks for the helpful tips. I'll post in another blog later how I'm doing.

    4. Hi Ruth, this reply is for you. (I have been having computer problems) Thanks for your comments on the adding of nuts, seeds, beans and olives. I was aware of cheese an croutons and dressing. And I knew about dried fruit - concentrated sugar. Thanks.

  4. Good luck. I know many people who are trying to eat healthy and finding it hard to find food they like. I'm not doing so well on finding time for myself and my family. Everything else comes in front of it.

    1. Melissa, it is hard. Other than fresh fruit and veges and natural foods like nuts and seeds, it's hard to find healthy, not too expensive, not too many additives food that tastes good and is quick and easy to prepare.
