Mary Martinez's Tour and Latest Book

Mary lives in Magna, a little town west of Salt Lake City, Utah. Together with her husband, she has six grown children, and six wonderful grandsons and five beautiful granddaughters. She loves to spend time with family and friends--she includes good books as friends!
Mary and her husband love to travel, especially to the Caribbean for relaxing, and Italy for the wine. And most recently she discovered she was Irish and Scottish, of course they had to visit Ireland and Scotland. Mary fell in love with both, but the green hills of Ireland felt like home. With the experience from the exotic places she has visited, she is able to fill her books with colorful descriptions of cities, painting a colorful backdrop for her characters. One of her favorite US destinations is New York/Brooklyn, where her beloved Beckett's live. When she visits, she can wander their neighborhoods, favorite parks, and visit their favorite pub, Putnum's.
They are avid concert ‘Ho’s’! Yes, they pretty much want to do them all. They love outdoor amphitheaters the best and attend as many during the warmer months as possible.
Mary writes mostly romantic suspense, romance, women's fiction, and she has just begun to dabble in young adult mystery. She is a member of Romance Writers of America (RWA). During her writing career she has been a conference coordinator, workshop presenter, and chapter president for the Utah Chapter of RWA. In 2007 she was presented with the Utah RWA service award in acknowledgment and appreciation for outstanding service. Mary has also participatedin numerous library panels on writing and co-presented a workshop on writing a series at the League of Utah Writers conference.
Mary and her husband are also enthusiastic college football fans. They have season tickets to the UTES, University of Utah Football and they tailgate every game. They love tailgating so much, that they were married at a tailgating in 1999.
GO UTES!

Blurb From Abandoned:

Glenna Beckett loves her family dearly,  but being the youngest of six can be overwhelming. Moving across country helped her learn who she was outside the family. She’s built a successful business in the form of a quaint shop on Main Street of Calistoga, that sells a bit of everything vintage, the new age term for antique. What more does she need?

Then he walked into her shop. International playboy, Lance Gordon. After a whirlwind courtship he asks her to marry him. Burying a niggle of doubt in the pit of her tummy, she says yes. He’s even agreed to have the wedding in Brooklyn so her family can attend. But he never arrives.

Glenna refused to believe she’d been abandoned at the altar and asks her brother, Tyler, to contact an agent friend on the West Coast to search for Lance.

Patrick McGinnis can’t believe he’s walking into a prissy shop in the high end of the Napa Valley searching for a missing groom. The bride, Glenna Beckett, is everything he feared, drop dead gorgeous, and a spoiled brat. Not that he’d ever tell her brother that. He hates wild goose chases, and this mission is exactly that. Patrick’s certain the playboy fiancé is off wooing some other delectable creature.

Unfortunately, once Patrick started to dig, he finds there’s more to the tale and it will take all his skills as an agent to keep Glenna safe. Especially when the case takes a turn and threatens the safety of his son, Finn.

Excerpt from Abandoned:

Patrick McGinnis thumbed his phone off and dropped the thing on the table with a thud. What had he just agreed to? He held in a groan, barely.
“What’s up dad? You look like you just ate a sour grape.”
Finnegan, his sixteen-year old son, and the joy of his life, walked to the cupboard and pulled out a bowl. He filled it with cereal and added milk and then joined Patrick at the table. He dipped his spoon for a large scoop, and as he brought it to his mouth, Finn gave him the I’m waiting look.
“I just received a call from an old friend,” he said in way of explanation, he really didn’t like talking work with his son.
“It must not have been a good conversation.”
“It was good to catch up. He was with me at Quantico.” Best to focus on the old acquaintance part.
“Dad, I’m in high school. You can stop sheltering me now. He must have called for a reason. One you’re not too thrilled about. What’s up?” He repeated his earlier question.
Damn, Finn was growing up to fast. And the kid was right. He had a tendency to shield him from his work. Something he’d always tried to do, but more since Finn was three and the worst thing that could ever happened to a child had happened.
“Tyler is an agent in New York, however, he has a sister in Calistoga.”
His son let out a hoot of laughter. “Match-making from the east coast.”
“Ha, ha. No, his sister seems to have lost her fiancé and her assistant.”
What they elope and left her behind? Why’d he call you?”
“The fiancé never arrived at the wedding. And then when his sister went to open her shop she found the assistant had been shot.”
“Oh.” Finn ate for a few minutes in silence. “Does the lost fiancé and the dead assistant have something to do with each other?”
“That’s one of the things Ty wants me to find out.”
Finn suspended his spoon half way to his mouth. “What is the other?”
“He wants me to find the missing fiancé for his sister.” He pulled his fingers through his hair. “It’s a wild goose chase if you ask me. If the guy had wanted to get married he’d have been at the wedding.”
“You’d think unless he couldn’t.”,
Patrick contemplated his son. He would make a good detective. He’d already helped solve a few of his cases, by just listening and making comments that brought other solutions to mind.
Patrick wasn’t sure he wanted that for his son. He loved being a federal agent. For a while, after the incident with his son, he’d tried something else. However, his true passion was law enforcement and he’d been placed back on duty within the year.
You couldn’t help where your heart led you. No matter the consequences.
That is what I need to find out.” He stood and poured more coffee into his cup to warm up the cooling liquid. He leaned a hip on the counter while he sipped. “What’s going on at school today?”
Finn finished his cereal and stood to wash his bowl out. He appeared to be thinking as he put his dishes in the dishwasher.
“I have an algebra test. Just a fair warning, Dad, it’s kicking my ass.”
“Language son.” But he smiled, he’d heard a lot worse. “I have a few minutes do you need my help?”
His son gave him a skeptical look, which was well warranted. Algebra had thoroughly kicked his ass in high school, too, to the point he’d needed Saturday morning classes to pass the damn class.
After a moment he answered. “No, Mrs. Stewart said she’d meet me before school.”
“Old Mrs. Stewart is still there? I had her for Algebra.” He smiled and resisted the urge to ruffle his son’s hair. Since the boy was almost as tall as he was, it’d be a little awkward anyway. “You’re in good hands then. Do you want me to drop you on my way to Calistoga?”

Jasper Trey's Newest Book

About me: Jennifer (or Jasper) Is a thirty something mother of two. She has a BS in Mathematics education, a Master’s in Business, a couple of certificates in wine making, a 200 hour certification in YOGA, and a love for LOVE. I have a tendency to live in my head and finally felt I had enough life experience to put one of my imaginings down on paper. I hope you find my books to be a feel good and enjoyable ride from start to finish.
Character Interview
Q: What’s your name?
Dante: Dante Romero
Q: Where did you grow up?
Dante: In the small country of Madiera, located in the middle of the Mediterranean.
Q: During what time period does your story take place?
Dante: My story is set in the present day.
Q: What’s your story/back story? Why would someone come up with a story about you?
Dante: I’m a prince of my small country. Having just retired from the military to concentrate on taking care of my people, I’ve found that taking care of myself is just as important.
Q: What’s your goal in this story?
Dante: My goal is to convince Olivia to stay in Madiera with me. I’m so much better with her beside me.
Q: What conflicts are you facing?
Dante: What problems do I face in this story? That’s an interesting question. Being a Prince means that I don’t have many problems. What I do have is a father intent on me leaving the military and taking up a role in the governing of our country, and did I mention he wants to pick out my wife?
Q: Do you have a plan for resolving them?
Dante: Once I decide what I want the first thing I do is outline my plan to get what I’m after.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
Dante: That Love is an amazing thing, but so is laughter. I’ve found you need both in life to be happy.

Blurb for Olivia:
Romance meets duty in this modern-day love story. Can Dante convince Olivia to take a chance on a future with him or will Olivia’s past hold her back?.
What happens when you’re made to retire long before it’s your time? For Dante it means flying halfway around the world to a beach where no one knows who he is. He must come home to his family and country and serve in a capacity he left ten years before, when he joined the military. What that capacity will look like, nobody knows, and he is given mere weeks to figure it out.

Olivia has no intention of starting an affair. She wants a beach, some sun, and the space to heal her heart. It’s been more than a year since her husband died and she hasn’t done much more than take care of their children in that time. This vacation is for her, but taking a beer to a stranger at the insistence of the staff, and making a five-minute friend? That won’t cut into her time to much, right?
Neither is looking for anything more than a friend in a remote land, but after spending a week together, will they really be able to walk away and find there happy ever after with someone else?

Kryssie Fortune's Latest Book

Kryssie reads everything and anything, from literary fiction to sizzling romance. Her earliest memory is going to the library with her mother. She can’t have been more than two at the time. Reading, especially when a book’s hot and explicit, is more than a guilty pleasure. It’s an obsession.
Kryssie loves to visit historic sites, from Hadrian’s wall to Regency Bath. The first book she fell in love with was Georgette Heyer’s The Unknown Ajax. After that, she devoured every regency book she could. After a while, they went out of fashion, but part of Kryssie’s psyche lives in in in Regency London. She longs to dance quadrilles and flirt behind fans. Of course, Kryssie’s heroines do far more than flirt.

Kryssie lives in Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast –about thirty miles from Whitby, where Bram Stoker wrote Dracula. She enjoys gardening, travel, and socializing with her author friends. You’d be surprised how many erotic romance authors live in the North of England.

Charles Lennox 4th Duke of Richmond commanded the reserve forces in Brussels during the Battle of Waterloo. His wife and daughters accompanied him to Belgium. On 15th June, his wife, Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond threw a ball.
With the exception of three generals, every officer in the Wellington’s army was there—including the great man himself.

One comment was the ball started with the ladies sat as stiff as waxworks, although they joined in the waltz – a dance deemed risqué by some. After that they danced a gallopade – a completely indecent and violent romp.
Hardly surprising. We Brits have always known how to party.

I imagine a ballroom full of beautiful ladies in elegant dresses, accompanied by the cream of Regency Gentlemen. Every nationality mingled there. Gordon Highlands danced reels to amuse the guests. Just before supper started, around 1am Wellington received a note from the Prince of Orange stating the French had crossed the river Sambre and skirmishing had started. The Duke calmly issued some commands and went through to supper.
He sat between Lady Georgiana, and Lady Frances Caroline Wedderburn-Webster. Lady Francis was supposedly the lover of both Lord Byron and the Iron Duke – although not at the same time.

Years later,Lady Georgiana, daughter of the Duchess of Richmond wrote this about it.
“It was a dreadful evening, taking leave of friends and acquaintances, many never to be seen again. The Duke of Brunswick, as he took leave of me in the ante-room adjoining the ball-room, made me a civil speech as to the Brunswickers being sure to distinguish themselves after "the honour" done them by my having accompanied the Duke of Wellington to their review! I remember being quite provoked with poor Lord Hay, a dashing merry youth, full of military ardour, whom I knew very well for his delight at the idea of going into action, and of all the honours he was to gain; and the first news we had on the 16th was that he and the Duke of Brunswick were killed. …
The contrast between the elegant ball and its aftermath is breath taking.

By the next evening many of the attendees, including the highlanders who’d dance for the guests’ pleasure were dead.
One the things I enjoyed most about writing my dark Regency Romance, Wickedly Used was the research.

Blurb for Wickedly Used

While he is no stranger to pleasurable company from ladies of the night, Major Richard Rothbury of the royal dragoons is not the kind of man who will stand idly by as a woman is taken against her will, and when he witnesses a disreputable cad attempting to force himself on a girl in a back alley, he does not hesitate to intervene.

But after the grateful young woman offers herself to Rothbury, he is shocked to discover that not only was she no harlot, she was a maiden and he has deflowered her. Furious at the girl’s scandalous behavior and her carelessness with her own safety, Rothbury chastises her soundly.

Though she is due to inherit one of the largest fortunes in England, the fact that she cannot touch the money until she marries or turns thirty has kept Elizabeth completely at the mercy of her cruel uncle, and for years she has been treated as if she were a servant. Her encounter with Lord Rothbury is by far the most exciting thing that has ever happened to her, but while he shows great concern for her safety, he refuses to believe that she is anything more than a serving girl.

Despite having made it clear that he doesn’t consider a match between them to be possible, when Elizabeth disobeys him Rothbury proves more than ready to strip her bare, punish her harshly, and then enjoy her beautiful body in the most shameful of ways. But can she dare to hope that he will one day make her his wife, or is she destined to spend her life being wickedly used?

Your Characters and You

This month’s topic is: Your characters come from your mind, sometimes interpretations of
other people you've witnessed or met, but can you create character lives without revealing something about yourself? Have your characters ever taught you something?
This one had me thinking. In Don’t Go I wrote in character based on some I didn’t like and some of the things they did. It was very cathartic. I guess in some ways it revealed something of myself an how I handled situations – in writing not real life. In Hunted at he beginning I put myself in the heroine’s position to get the feeling of how she’d react, so again I guess that reveals something of myself and how I would react in similar situations.

Because we are writers and have to make our characters come alive for our readers I think some of the feelings, emotions and reactions have to so come from us. So yes, I think my books do reveal something about myself.
Have my characters ever taught me something? This one’s a little trickier. Do my books teach me anything? Absolutely. Every book I write I research so I’m always learning something. In my Hawkins Ranch series, I learned a lot about ranching and the Blackfoot nation. From my characters, maybe. In Hunted, I wrote the story but maybe I learned you can’t do everything alone and sometimes other people do have good input. In Targeted, again it’s what I wrote, but sometimes we don’t always want what we think we want.
I’m looking forward to seeing what other writers have to say on this topic. Don’t forget to check them out.

Beverley Oakley's Tour and New Book

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist.

Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.
Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.

Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth-century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.
Character Interview for The Accidental Elopement

Q -What’s your name?
Katherine: Katherine and I’m the daughter of Lord and Lady Fenton, though I spend a lot of time with my Uncle, the Earl of Quamby. That’s where I met Jack, the young boy from the foundling home who came regularly to be a playmate for my Cousin George. George didn’t know how to behave with honour and dignity so it’s funny to me that it was Jack, from the foundling home, who was his role model.
Q -Where did you grow up?
Katherine: I spent a lot of time in the gardens of Quamby House hiding in the apple tree with Jack when we were seven. George who was very spoiled and something of a bully. At the time, I didn’t realise how much George wanted to be admired by Jack and loved by me.
Sadly, the consequences of my dismissive attitude towards George has resulted in terrible tragedy for all of us. I’m hoping it’ll work out, but I don’t imagine any of us will get our heart’s desire, now. Honour is at stake and Jack is too much the man of honour to sacrifice his solemn pledge to his dying benefactor Zebediah Worthington which is that he’ll marry and protect his daughter.
Jack and I missed our chance. I must accept that, now.
But it’s hard.
Q -During what time period does your story take place?
Katherine: 1925 (when we were 7), 1836 (when we were 18), and 1843 (when we were 24).
Q -What’s your story/back story?
Katherine: I’m the daughter of Fanny Brightwell who, with her sister, Antoinette, is known as London’s Matchmaking Queen for having made scandal-ridden rags-to-riches marriages. Consequently, my mother has been very protective of me but I resemble her greatly in character.
Jack has been my best friend since I was 7 and it was terribly inconvenient when we met at 18 and fell in love, just as I was about to find a titled and well-connected husband.
Although Jack had been adopted by a good family and brought up as a gentleman from the age of eight, he was not the kind of husband I was looking for. Besides, he was off to the West Indies to make his fortune. But then I realised I couldn’t live without him.
Unfortunately, a terrible misunderstanding led to my eloping with the wrong man. Of course, Jack never knew. Not until his mother wrote and told him months later I was now Lady Marples. He thought I’d forsaken him.
Q -Why would someone come up with a story about you?
Katherine: I’m sorry to say that I think that is a rather impertinent question. I am considered rather fascinating by most of the gentlemen I meet.
Q -What’s your goal in this story?
Katherine: To be happy. I lost Jack once, and I must accept that, now he’s back seven years later – even though I’m a widow - there are too many conflicts standing in the way. I have my daughter as solace while my aunt is embarking on a madcap scheme to unite Jack and me. The trouble is, if I use my trump card to win Jack, it’ll destroy him.
I know that, but I love him too much to do that to him.
Thank you for taking an interest. I don’t think my story will have a happy ending, though my aunt says they don’t call her the Matchmaking Queen for nothing.

It’s true, I would swim through shark-infested oceans if it were to save the man I love.
But I won’t do anything to make him beholden to me.

 Excerpt from The Accidental Elopement:
In this excerpt, Katherine is hiding in a dark corridor to avoid dancing with someone she has no wish to see during her first ball as a newly arrived London debutante. She then receives a rude shock!

No one had thought to light a candle sconce and this second corridor turning she’d taken was as black as a dungeon. Katherine couldn’t even see her hand but she wasn’t frightened of the dark. No, Katherine was not fainthearted.
Yet she did squeal when, taking another step, her progress was impeded by a very large object and, with no warning at all, she found herself flying through the air, landing with a painful jarring of her wrists upon the cold, hard flagstones.

“Good Lord!” came a disembodied young male voice in the dark before a groping hand located a piece of Katherine – namely a hank of hair – which caused her to shriek even louder when it was quite unnecessarily tugged. Whether this was to establish who or what she was, she had no idea – and perhaps neither did the tugger for immediately a profound apology was issued before the groping hand was operating with complete abandon in the dark.
This time it found Katherine’s breast just as the voice said in tones of utter mortification, “Forgive me! Are you hurt? Here, let me help you. That’s what I was trying to do, I promise. I didn’t realise you were on the ground? Take my hand. Really, I can’t apologise enough.”

Katherine had made one unsuccessful attempt to stand but it was a struggle in her flounced skirt and multiple corded petticoats. She swatted away the supposedly helping hand and hissed something unintelligible – somehow unladylike language seemed less of an offence when she couldn’t see to whom she was speaking.
But when the disembodied groping hand entered her orbit once more – in fact, brushing the bare flash above her garter and getting in a good squeeze of her thigh flesh, her temper which had never been one of her strong points, snapped and she lashed out with a sharp slice through the inky air.

A loud yelp made her realise she’d perhaps been a little peremptory and certainly too violent in this unladylike action and even though she felt disinclined to apologise she did say, ungraciously, “I’m sorry I hit you but a lady can only take so much of all this groping in the dark. I mean…what were you doing?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” came the response, now at ear level. In fact, she could feel the soft whisper of breath against her cheek which made her step back, saying, “I asked first.”

“I was chasing a cat. Bending down in fact. And then something crashed into me. Or on top of me.”
“That was me.”

“Yes, of course it was you. There’s no one else here, is there?”
Katherine bridled at his tone. She was unused to being spoken to as if she were at fault when, in this case, she most certainly wasn’t. “I think that’s a very rude response,” she told him. “Just as it was very thoughtless of you to crouch down where anybody could simply trip over you.”

“Anybody – or rather, anybody else – would be carrying a candle. I think I have every reason to be deeply suspicious of the motives of anyone who is not.”
“Well, you don’t have a candle. And I would suspect the truth of anyone hiding away in the dark, claiming they were crouching over an imaginary cat,” huffed Katherine. “In fact, I’d wager there was no cat here at all. I would have heard it. No, you were sneaking away from something, weren’t you?”

“And if I was, what business of yours? Whoever you are.”
Katherine could not imagine the audacity. “You certainly are no gentleman to speak to a lady in that fashion.”

“Since that lady hasn’t bothered to declare herself, I think I could be forgiven.”
“A gentleman would have declared himself first,” Katherine said hotly. “What were you sidling away from? There’s a noisy ball going on in the next room. If you were a gentleman, wouldn’t you be gallantly asking the ladies to dance instead of hiding in the dark? Perhaps there’s someone you’re afraid of seeing? A lady who has expectations of you behaving towards her as a gentleman.” Katherine said this triumphantly before elaborating on her theme. “My guess is that you’ve given some poor young lady the idea that you’ll dance with her all night and now you’ve changed your mind and are sneaking away.”

“Since you put forward the idea, I’d suggest the reason you’re here is exactly the same. You’re trying to sneak away from a gentleman to whom you’ve already promised two dances. Meanwhile he, poor fellow, is searching for you vainly in the ballroom while you’re here making a mockery of him.”
“He can do that all by himself,” Katherine sniffed. “But I never promised him anything and I never will.”

“Ha! I was right.” The voice sounded very pleased with itself. “Well, I feel sorry for this fellow without even seeing what you look like, miss. Poor fellow!”
“Poor fellow, indeed. George can pine til the cows come home. I’d even suffer talking to you than have to spend another five minutes with his sweating hands squeezing mine and his moon eyes boring into me…and his horrible, putrid breath choking me and his—”

“Poor George! I was just starting to feel sorry for him until you described the exact George I, too, am so at pains to avoid tonight.” The voice became more confidential and the mood relaxed.

Katherine crossed her arms and waited for him to speak again for she was rather interested in his George and then quite amused when the voice began to describe the very George against whom she railed.
“Well, you have described my cousin to a very fine point,” she laughed. “And if you are as well acquainted with him as you seem to be, then you obviously know exactly why I am here in the dark.”

There was a small silence. And then, “Your cousin?”
“In my family there are two Georges: Young George who is the son of my aunt and her husband, Lord Quamby, and Odious George who is his uncle, George Bramley.”

“Then we’re talking about the same George!” The voice sounded stunned.
A quick gasp from both of them was followed up by a delighted cry in unison.
“Jack!”
“Katherine!”
