Melissa Keir's Christmas Anthology

Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a movie reviewer with WHMI (a local radio station), owner of a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.
She’d love to hear from you!

Melissa’s Favorite Christmas Ornaments

With Christmas almost here, I assume most everyone has their tree up already. Luckily for me, my husband loves to put up the decorations and put up our tree the day after Thanksgiving. It doesn’t hurt that the tree is a fake one. We purchased it last year from a store which specializes in cabin décor. So our tree has a real wood trunk and small pinecones on the needles.

While the tree is new, the decorations aren’t. Both my husband and I have some ornaments from our childhoods which we love to put on our tree each year, as well as a few ornaments from our grandparents’ trees. The memories associated with the ornaments make the holiday even more special as we put them up. It’s like having our loved ones celebrating with us.

One such ornament is a colored glass ball with gold on it. This came from my husband’s grandmother’s tree. She had them on her Christmas tree each year but over the years, some of the bulbs broke and we are down to only three left. From my grandmother’s tree, I have a red bird. It has a long tail with glitter on it, not feathers. I can recall trying to pet the bird in her tree as a kid. Thankfully, the bird isn’t breakable but still we treat it like gold. Some of the ornaments survived more than children’s fingers. My husband’s elf survived a flood which cost his brothers their elves.

By far our favorite ornaments are the ones that the children made. The pompom snowmen and beaded candy canes. They remind us of a time when little hands sought to help us decorate the tree and stared with delight at the presents underneath.

Do you have a special ornament which you still put up each year? What is your favorite ornament and why?

Thank you for visiting and Merry Christmas.

  2. Merry Christmas Melissa, I love how you have special ornaments that has history. Sadly, I don't have any. Oh, I do have a picture of my three children when they were little that we did glue to a Christmas paper. I do put them on our family tree every year. You have me thinking that maybe I should give an ornament to each of my grandchildren that they could keep and pass down to their own children - hmm. Thanks for the post and thought.

    1. My former mother in law did that...She gave the children an ornament each year which talked about the year (baseball mitt for the year my son played baseball or a lighthouse for the year my daughter went to the ocean). They have those ornaments now and can begin their lives as adults with all those memories. :)

    2. I used to fix up a small fake tree, only my cat kept biting the chord and shocking herself. After the third purchase of new lights, I called it quits and instead decorated my bay window with pretty large reindeer that my sister made for me. I still do that.
