BEGINNINGS

Thank you, Jinny for sending everyone my way and welcome everyone to my thoughts on beginnings.

Beginnings – the very word sends my mind going in several directions. There’s beginning school, beginning a new job, beginning a marriage, beginning your first book.

As has been suggested, it can be exciting, terrifying and all together nerve wracking all at the same time.

I’m sure you can all relate. How about starting that new job?  Nervous, terrified, unsure if you can handle it, what will your co-workers be like, but it’s what you want to do, you’ve studied for it, you’re excited.

What about beginning a new life with someone; moving in together, deciding who get closet space and who cleans the bathroom. Okay, maybe the last part isn’t that exciting, but don’t tell me even if you care for someone you don’t find living together exciting. It may be an experience beyond your wildest imagination, or it might turn out to be disappointing, or even downright disastrous.

I’ve experienced most of those beginnings and a few more. My latest is writing a book. It’s exciting when you start, the rejections are disappointing. However, I can’t quit, the excitement drives me. I love working out plots and traveling the journey with my characters. It’s an awesome experience. That beginning just keeps me excited and writing. I have a book published, which was another exciting beginning.

What about you? Anyone want to share a beginning they’ve had? Was it exciting, positive, or a disaster?

  1. I'm sure all types of beginnings give you great ideas for mystery plots. Doesn't it seem like change in routine is what brings on disaster? Thanks for participating!

    1. I hadn't thought of it, but you're right, it's often a change in routine that can cause problems. Now that I can use in a book.

  2. Beverly, there have certainly been a lot of beginnings for each of us. It's so interesting to hop from blog to blog and see how we each interpreted the topic. I've enjoyed all the posts so far and I'm not even finished. I've just started a new book, too...so here's to our new beginnings...may we each garner mega sales. :)

  3. Some beginnings have been great! Others have been not so good. Somehow, I've survived them all. LOL

    1. I think that goes for all of us. Enjoy the good ones and learn form the others.

  4. I've started so many stories. Beginnings are my favorite part of the writing process. I get an idea, and sit down and pound out the first three or so chapters in a blur of excitement... then it languishes on my laptop. I'm not so good at middles and endings. The good part is now I have tons of story ideas. I'm choosing the ones I like best and finally completing them even though new stories keep coming!

    I love your book cover!

  5. Beverly after the 25th rejection you feel no pain! Just keep writing. My YA novel, Whisper upon the Water, was an interesting experience. A publisher (you would recognize the name) called me at work and spoke to me for 30 minutes apologizing because he couldn't publish my novel. He had just sold the company and the new publisher was no longer interested in YA historical novels.
Label this as one of my "this can't be happening to me" moments. I did sell my novel, won the Dream Real Award and was both a Frankfurt Book Award and National Book Award nominee. The book is even in the archives of my local library. So, as the Native Americans believe: the story finds the person who is destined to bring it to life.

    1. I love your Native American beliefs including this one- the story finds the person destined to bring it to life.
      And congrats on your awards.

  6. New beginnings can be interesting or hard. All depends upon your perspective. Writing is a career where you always have a new beginning each time you start a book or submit it to an editor. You never know just where they might end up.

I tend to be a pantser because every time I've tried my hand at plotting, the characters laugh at me and tell me to do it their way. LOL!

Congrats on your new endeavor. The rejections get easier to take as time goes on and as long as you're writing that next book, all is well.

    1. Thanks Lynn. I love new beginnings. (not always the results)
And like so many of us, I don't think I could ever quit writing.

  7. Beginning a new book is always wonderful. The ideas flow and you can't type the scenes fast enough. It's like channeling, only the characters are all imaginary, and their only voice is through you. I'd love for it to be more profitable, so I could afford to work other jobs less and write more...but at least I have a hobby I love!

  8. Hey Fiona,
I so agree with your comment - both about the ideas flowing and the profitability.
Hang in there, maybe it will come.
