Writing in 2021

Happy New Year, everyone! Rhobin is starting the new year by getting us to focus. At least that’s how it’s working for me. Our topic for this month is - What is on your writing to-do list for this year? Do you have any long-range goals or just wrap-ups?

Covid is still here and I found that last year Covid fatigue began affecting my writing. Staying home, social distancing and no hugs left me with decreased motivation and diminished energy which worsened with cold weather, snow and ice. My writing suffered and I wrote less and less.

We’re still in lock-down, wearing masks and social distancing but there is a vaccine and a light in the tunnel that life will improve. And spring is only a few months away. So, I’m meditating, eating healthier and getting motivated again. My writing to-do list is a combination of both long-range goals and wrap-ups. I have my novel which I had hoped to finish last year. I didn’t, so finish the book and get it published is on the wrap-up list. I took a workshop last year on advertising and doing ads and I haven’t utilized the information. I want to start doing some ads on a regular basis – another wrap-up item. I need to finish reading a fe books and write reviews for them – another wrap-up.

My to-do list is to write a novella, which I want to put up on Amazon for free. I also want to write a short story to give away on my website to those who sign-up for my newsletter. I also want to do research for the short story, the novella, and for my next book which I would like to start in the fall.

I look forward to seeing what’s on everyone else’s list for the year.

  1. Hi Beverley, A good list of interesting wrap-ups and a new book, too. I'll look out for them and hope you'll alert us as they come off the printer! Anne

  2. Interesting times in a bad way, Beverley. Never thought a pandemic would occur in current time. It has given me a new perspective on past ones. Great writing and reading goals.

    1. Thanks, Rhobin. It's definitely changed most of us, in many ways. Hopefully we keep the good changes.

  3. COVID fatigue is real. I think it’s affecting everyone. We’re social creatures, for the most part. But I’m glad to hear you’re writing again, and it sounds exciting. Hopefully, we’ll crawl out of this soon.

    1. Crawling out is exactly how I feel. Not running excitedly into a new year. I hope you're coping and crawling through your COVID fatigue.

  4. I hear you on Covid effects. I don't know anyone who hasn't been affected in some way, either directly by contracting the virus or indirectly because of the fall out around it. Let's all look forward to happier and more settled times.

  5. Beverley, if the problem is lack of hugs, I am emailing you a whole basketful of virtual ones.

    1. Aw, Bob, thank you. Got the basketful. It made me smile and feel better.

  6. You reflected my feelings of last year. I do enjoy my life and I know I am fortunate, but as the year went on I felt the same disconnection to my writing and my work in progress. I ended the year with over 30 days that I didn't even look at my book. Thus, your goals for the year reflect mine, too. Here's a hope and a hug that we both succeed.

    1. Unfortunately COVID fatigue affects so many of us. I wish you good luck with your goals for the year, and a time when we can finally hug our friends.

  7. I feel like a slacker after reading your list! Hopefully you'll accomplish all of that and more!

I really miss hugging my kids and seeing them in person. And my two toddler grandsons are growing up 5 hours away, but it might as well be 500 miles, since we can't go visit them. And while Zoom and Skype let us SEE them, it's not like being there and basking in their adorable-ness.

"This too, shall pass," has become my new mantra. I hope I'm right.

  8. We all have different goals and a lot of mine are because I was barely writing last year. Hopefully you'll be able to see your kids and grandkids later this year. i

  9. Yup, Covid kicked my butt for a few months last year as well. Once I wrapped my head around it and settled into working from home, things began to flow. As of the end of January, we're still in lockdown as well. Movies are great, but writing and reading helps me to pass the time when I'm not working.

  10. I agree the stay-home restrictions and social distancing are isolating. Zoom and phone calls keep us in touch with family and friends but, sadly, you can't reclaim the 'lost' interaction. COVID has touch almost every family with the loss of a family member(s) or friend. I adopted a rescue pup, mid-year, to insert some chaos in my life :) and act as a companion for my King Charles Spaniel-poodle mix. I'm writing again. The winter cold, rain, and snow and hail (in SoCal!) have kept me indoors and more focused.
As for the Pandemic, as Fiona mentioned, "This too, shall pass."
