Breathing hard, Blade swung away from
her. “I’d better go.”
“No, don’t go.” She gripped his
arm. I must do this.
“You don’t want me.” He kept his head
turned from her.
“I made a promise,” she blurted before
she could stop herself.
I can’t tell him, I promised Ynyr. “To...Keefe.” She looked quickly at her mate and he nodded, but
wore a confused expression.
“You must come,” Paz told Blade. “We
are the only three of our family unit healthy enough to make the journey.”
“Why is that, youngling?” Blade glared
at him.
“Ynyr is dying,” Keefe shouted. “And
Lug, our podling, is fading.”
“My two podlings aren’t allowed to come
either.” Paz’s voice rose to a squeak. Tears streamed. “You’ve got to come,
Blade, you just have to.”
Keefe gave his triplet a long stare.
“We three and Aziza need to go on.”
Clutching Blade by his wrist, she said,
“Come on, bite me. I know you want to.”
As her pheromones filled the room,
their scent like pod blossoms in the springtime, the males sniffed the air.
“My heart, what are you doing?” Keefe
asked in a tense voice.
“I’m keeping my promise.”
Blade closed his eyes and moaned.
“That’s a dirty trick.”
Paz sprang from his seat to tug his
other arm, forcing him to look at Aziza. “Do it. I want you to come with us,
and this is the only way.”
“And you, my podling?” Blade met Keefe’s eyes. “Do you really want to share your mate with me?”
